Prof Mustafa Atabey

Professor Dr Mustafa Atabey is a consultant general surgeon with a strong focus on bariatric and metabolic surgery, advanced laparoscopic procedures and complex gastrointestinal surgery. Born in Kırşehir in 1983, he completed his primary and secondary education there before graduating from Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine in 2007 and starting his professional career in general surgery.

Prof. Atabey completed his medical training at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine (2000–2007) and went on to specialise in General Surgery at Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Medicine, where he obtained his specialist qualification in 2013. During his residency and early specialist years he worked at Cumhuriyet University’s Department of General Surgery and at Doç. Dr. Yaşar Eryılmaz State Hospital in Ağrı, gaining extensive experience in emergency and elective general surgery.

His academic career began at Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery, where he served as an Assistant Professor between 2015 and 2018. He later continued as a faculty member at Biruni University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery (2019–2021). Alongside his university posts, Prof. Atabey has worked in well-known private hospitals including Medicana Hospital in Sivas and part-time at Medicana Bahçelievler Hospital in Istanbul, treating a broad range of surgical patients with a particular emphasis on obesity surgery and minimally invasive techniques.

In 2015, Prof. Atabey further advanced his skills by attending a Postgraduate Course on Robotic General Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, focusing on modern robotic approaches in gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery. Today his main areas of interest include bariatric surgery (such as sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass), gastric balloon procedures, gallbladder and bile duct stone surgery, oncological surgery for cancers of the pancreas, stomach and biliary system, and HIPEC (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) for selected abdominal cancers.

Professor Dr Mustafa Atabey is an active member of numerous professional societies, including the Turkish Surgical Association, IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders), the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery Association, the Turkish Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery Association, the Turkish Obesity Surgery Association, the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Association, the Istanbul Surgical Association and the Surgical Days Association.

In his daily practice, Prof. Atabey combines up-to-date scientific evidence with a patient-centred, empathetic approach. He places great importance on detailed pre-operative assessment, clear information about treatment options and risks, and long-term follow-up after surgery – especially for patients undergoing obesity and metabolic procedures.
